Purpose

This present trip was the realization of my need to research thoroughly, by direct observation; those connections I feel already exist in my work as a sculptor. The connections I am looking for in the Native American work was how architecture and art relate to the environment. This, I interpret as the physical shape, color and texture of the landscape, climate, and animal species native to the inter-connective habitats. Another connective element was the sharing of art and culture among different peoples. This also entailed trying to learn and become sensitive to the spirituality inherent in Native American art. I also wanted to become more familiar with colonial art and architecture and the Mexican muralists.
